«POLAR» In-orbit calibration

During the calibration phase data analysis focuses only on GRBs confirmed and measured by other instruments allowing further calibration of the instrument. The calibration phase is nearing completion and will be followed by the science data taking phase which will also focus on detecting bursts not measured by other instruments.

Following a 21 day commissioning period, initial data shows that the polarimeter is working as expected, «POLAR» has already detected several GRBs, all of which have been verified by other instruments.

"Tiangong-2" Space Laboratory

China launched their second space laboratory "Tiangong-2" on Thursday, 15th September. The only non-chinese experiment onboard is «POLAR», a gamma-ray polarimeter using power supply units developed and supplied by Art of Technology.

Art of Technology, together with prime contractor Almatech Sarl, has won a contract from the European Space Agency (ESA) for the design, development, production and supply of the Detector Electronics Module (DEM) used in the Spectrometer/Telescope for Imaging X-Rays (STIX). STIX is a Swiss experiment under the leadership of the University of Applied Science Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) funded by the Swiss Space Office and is one of ten instruments on-board the Solar Orbiter which is scheduled for launch in 2018.
